Production Context
Nudes is a teen drama produced by Vertigo Films for 3Cat, structured in three blocks of three episodes each, with each block telling a different story. Directed by Carmen Aumedes, Carlos Villafaina, and Sofía Farré, the series explores how the leaking of intimate images on social media reshapes the lives of three teenagers: Sofia (16), Alex (17), and Ada (14).
In this production, social networks are not secondary elements. They are the narrative space where everything unfolds. Private messages, image exchanges, comments, reposts, and viral circulation carry the dramatic weight of the story. The screen is not a prop — it is the arena.
Designing these mobile interfaces required rethinking what "screen graphics" mean when digital interaction becomes dramatic action. For Askforscreens, this meant creating 69 screens across the full production — a significant volume delivered under tight deadlines, with some navigation sequences extending beyond two minutes of continuous interaction.
Fictional Apps, Real Behaviour
All applications were fictional but inspired by real social platforms. The goal was recognizable behaviour without direct replication. The challenge was subtle: interfaces needed to feel authentic to teenage audiences while remaining legally independent and narratively controlled.
Teen viewers are extremely sensitive to digital inaccuracy. If an interface feels outdated, inconsistent, or "adult-designed," immersion collapses instantly. Behavioural realism mattered more than visual mimicry — message timing, scroll rhythm, notification logic, profile structures, story progression. Authenticity here was behavioural, not cosmetic.
To enhance verisimilitude and bring the digital world closer to teen reality, we also designed custom memes and stickers. These small details — often overlooked in production — are essential to making fictional social platforms feel lived-in rather than designed.

When Screen Time Exceeds One Minute
One of the defining challenges of this production was the length of certain navigation sequences. In one case, a continuous interaction — without pauses for reading — extended beyond 1 minute and 34 seconds in demonstration form. In real dramatic context, this could easily stretch past two minutes. And it was not an isolated example.
For a mobile interface in a narrative series, that is unusually long. In most productions, screen interactions last seconds, not minutes. But Nudes was conceived by young directors exploring digital spaces as primary storytelling tools. The script placed heavy narrative weight on what happened inside the phone.
This meant complex navigation paths, multiple screens within a single dramatic beat, high density of content loaded into single devices, and emotional reactions tied to scrolling and message discovery. The screen carried its own dramatic arc.
The Risk of Literal Navigation
Through experience, we often advise simplifying navigation paths. Cinema is not a usability demo. What feels realistic in real life can feel repetitive on screen. Editing inevitably compresses interaction.
In this case, we discussed the length and density of certain sequences with the directors and script supervisors. They were fully aware of the ambition and chose to pursue it. Our role in these situations is not to impose decisions but to support narrative intent while anticipating production consequences.
Indeed, some longer navigation sequences were eventually shortened in editing for pacing reasons. That is part of the cinematic process. However, even when trimmed, the full interactive path served a purpose: it grounded the actor's performance. A complete navigation logic helps performers inhabit the digital space truthfully, even if the final cut shows only fragments.
Designing for Actors, Not Just Viewers
Long mobile navigation is demanding for actors. They must remember the sequence, execute gestures precisely, react emotionally, and maintain rhythm. To support this, structured preparation is essential.
Before each interactive sequence, we provide clear navigational logic and ensure the path is intuitive. For complex sequences, we create instructional slides — one for technical specifications, another for the navigation path itself — and a video demonstration showing the full interaction. This allows the props team to understand the flow and explain it to actors on set.
When navigation is particularly long, actors are given access in advance so they can rehearse and internalize the digital choreography. When budgets allow, we are present on set. In other cases, the art team coordinates execution using detailed references prepared beforehand.
The goal is not technical perfection. It is fluid performance. An actor who trusts the system performs better.
Engineering Intuition Under Pressure
With 69 screens developed across the full production, volume and time pressure were significant. Design, programming, and testing had to happen rapidly. Some of the longest navigation sequences required multiple internal logic paths to ensure that the interaction felt intuitive.
Sometimes alternative routes were built within the system to prevent actors from getting "lost" mid-scene. Simplification mechanisms and controlled flexibility are often necessary in high-pressure shoots. We also had concerns about whether mid-range devices — typically used on set rather than flagship hardware — could handle the heavy interactive content without performance issues. Optimization became critical.
Long sequences are not only narratively demanding. They are technically demanding. The challenge was delivering high-volume, high-complexity work within compressed timelines while maintaining quality and usability on set.
Social Media as Emotional Architecture
In Nudes, social networks are not aesthetic accessories. They are emotional catalysts. The series deals with the circulation of intimate images and the social consequences that follow. Shame, exposure, judgment, and solidarity all unfold within digital spaces.
This transforms the screen into an emotional architecture. Message threads carry tension. Scroll reveals trigger shock. Notifications create anxiety. The interface becomes a psychological landscape.
Designing such systems requires sensitivity. Over-design trivializes trauma. Under-design weakens impact. The interface must remain believable and restrained, allowing performance to carry emotional weight.
Volume, Discipline, and Synthesis
Large volumes of screens under tight deadlines require disciplined workflow. But more importantly, they require narrative synthesis. We consistently advocate starting from simplification. In cinema, time is scarce. If interaction can be reduced without losing meaning, it should be.
However, workflow discipline does not depend solely on execution speed. It depends on information arriving correctly and on time. We often spend as much time gathering essential details — fictional dates and times, previous chat histories, coherent profile grids — as we do designing and programming. Everything may seem trivial on screen, but every detail has been considered and crafted to feel believable and align with the narrative thread.
This is where mistakes easily happen. A mismatched timestamp, an inconsistent profile name, a chat sequence that doesn't align with the story — these small errors break immersion. At Askforscreens, we work as a complementary team to ensure that every detail fits. Complex navigation may serve rehearsal and immersion, but storytelling benefits from compression. Designing digital sequences for film is not about reproducing reality at full scale. It is about extracting its dramatic essence.

Nudes represents a category of production where digital environments are not secondary. They are central. In such contexts, screen graphics evolve from background design to narrative infrastructure.
The challenge lies in balancing authentic digital behaviour, actor usability, technical feasibility, editorial rhythm, and emotional credibility. When digital navigation becomes dramatic action, interface design becomes part of direction.
And when the screen carries emotional consequence, its design demands responsibility.
